Relationship Counselling
Relationship counselling can comprise of issues related to: communication, conflict/ separation, commitment, blended family, infidelity, parenting, same sex, and more. The goal of couples counselling is to target the main concern for each or one of the individuals involved. Next, the couple will work with a therapist to identify each individual’s accountability for both positive and negative contributions to a relationship. The critical point is acknowledging ways each individual can make improvements alone and how the couple can work to progress together in the relationship. There does not need to be a crisis or ‘blow-up’ for counselling to be initiated. Most couples can benefit from a healthy check-in and restructuring of wants and needs, before an intervention is necessary or feels critical.
In our relationship counselling sessions in Mississauga, we will work to develop a clear agreement between the partners that their exchanges will not involve shaming or blaming one another. Criticism must be constructive, rather than destructive. We will conduct one individual session each after the first meeting as a couple, and then come together again for all subsequent sessions. This way, a therapist can understand your past and present relationships (so that we can identify patterns in the ways your relationships are manifested). Overall, we will work to renew trust, respect, warmth, and desire for affection and intimacy. If one individual is not willing to come, it is possible to identify personal goals and strategies within a relationship.
What are relationship problems or relationship issues?
Relationships are a fundamental part of our lives and well-being. It is important to understand how to be healthy and effective in our individual contributions to a relationship. Many relationships consist of conflict and misunderstanding. One of the most important goals of relationship counselling is to establish healthy boundaries and guidelines. It is important to acknowledge that relationship counselling is not limited to partner or marriage counselling. It often also refers to therapy for: family, friends, or work relationships.
Your first session involves initial assessment of your well being and a thorough intake of your personal history and background. Subsequent therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length, and are unique to each individual treatment plan.
